Austin Texas, April 2014.
According to national surveys done in 2013 very few women and only about half of the men surveyed knew how to change a flat tire.
Bridgestone has just launched a new tire that, at zero air pressure, can safely be driven 50 miles at 50 miles per hour.
Tuesday, April 1st I boarded a plane and headed over to the Circuit of America Speedway in Austin, Texas to see this for myself. After taking all the air out of the left front tire, we were challenged to drive it flat at speeds up to 50 mph. We went through a series of turns and braking situations to evaluate the handling and safety of their new product.
With the tire totally flat I could let the steering wheel go and the car went straight down the road.
This is not a self sealing tire as we have seen in the past. Those tires were filled with a special sealer which made them ride very rough and they were prone to a lot of vibration.
Driveguard is the latest member of the run-flat family. The original run-flats were very costly to produce. The technology that has gone into this product is amazing and it costs only slightly more then a non run-flat tire.
Bridgestone is so confident in these tires, that if you do ruin a tire in the first 12 months, they will give you a new tire, Free of charge.
